Letter Order: Traditionally, the last initial is positioned in the middle, and is larger than the other two that flank it. If your name is Emma Grace Smith, your monogram would be ESG. One letter, two letter, three? In today’s monogramming etiquette, anything goes, really! A three-letter initial is the most traditional. Next popular is the two-letter initial monogram. Let’s not forget that fairly recently, it was tradition to give girls only a first name as it was expected that they would move their last name to their middle name and take their husband’s last name. As for the single initial, it is a nice clean look. You can place two dots on either side of the initial or a design underneath. Both are very nice, a bit more modern and they can be passed on to others.
Bride and Bridegroom: Again, as far as tradition goes, use the woman’s initials, with her new last-name initial in the middle. Lately I have received requests for the bridegroom’s first name initial on the left side, the bride’s first name initial on the right side and their new last name initial in the middle, larger. Granted, I know few men who care about linens, so you could simply stick with the bride’s new name initials and be just fine … either way, the linens will be cherished!
Baby: I am often asked whether to put the baby’s full name, first and middle or only the first. Let’s start with logistics -- the size of the item will determine how many letters we can use, but a general rule is to place the baby’s first and middle name. As for the date of birth, again it depends on the item. Our microfiber chenille blanket allows plenty of room and looks nice with the date; the animal pillows are fun with the dates, as well! Now, the linen baby pillows … I think a single name on the front looks best; we can always sneak the date on the back if you wish!
Children: This is up for debate! However, in keeping with safety recommendations, if the item will be worn in public, I would go with a three-initial monogram; otherwise, go with their name, nickname, or whatever you think the child will love.
